A brief introduction to Syracuse

During a recent visit to Syracuse, I had the opportunity to see the city firsthand, and experience all that it had to offer.

Home to the world-renowned Syracuse University, the city of Syracuse is a lot more than just a college city. It has a thriving nightlife, good-looking parks, ample of shopping opportunities, wineries, and lots and lots of delicious food.

Encapsulating Sicily's immortal beauty like none other, Syracuse is New York’s fifth largest city and lies in the central region of New York State. With a population of 662,000 in itsmetro area, it’s also the third largest city in Upstate New York.

Syracuse is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies along a harmonious bay, reaching into the ocean via the island of Ortygia. With a serene, poetic atmosphere prevailing, one visitingthe city gets to see one of the many entrancing places that have been restored to their former glory.

It’s a place where ancient Greek ruins rise out of lush citrus orchards, cafe tables spill onto dazzling baroque piazzas. It's quite impossible to conceive this idea now, but in its prime,
Syracuse was one of the biggest cities in the ancient world. It all began in 734 BC, when Corinthian colonists reached the shores of the island of Ortygia. It has been quite a whilenow, but Ortygia, across the mainland city, still remains the city's most stunning space.

If you happen to find yourself in Syracuse, make sure you delve a few kilometres north to the city, into its Greek past; to when the city was one of the most greatest in the ancient world.
